# Understanding Spaces: Building a Social Network for Sustainability

Welcome to our Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Community Knowledge Base! Our platform operates as a **Social Network for Sustainability**, connecting change-makers, educators, and advocates worldwide.

To organize global action effectively, our platform utilizes **Spaces**—dedicated, focused hubs where members collaborate on specific sustainability targets.

**What is a "Space" in the SDG Connect Network?**

A **Space** is an interactive sub-community or interest group within our main network. Think of each Space as a focused digital forum equipped with its own activity feed, member directory, real-time messaging, and media resources.

In our network, Spaces serve as the backbone for collective action, enabling localized discussions, project sharing, and data collection around specific global objectives.

**The 17 SDG Spaces: Structure and Participation**

Our platform features **17 dedicated Spaces**, each corresponding directly to one of the **United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)**.

**SDG 1: No Poverty** – Focuses on economic empowerment, social protection, and local relief initiatives.

- **Hashtags & Mentions:** Tag specific topics (e.g., #Reforestation) or @mention fellow members to bring them into the discussion.

- **Data Collection:** Launch community polls to gather opinions, crowdsource ideas, or vote on local action initiatives.

### **3. Space Group Chat & Direct Messaging**

- **Space Group Chat:** Each SDG Space features a dedicated group chat room where joined members can converse in real time.
- **Direct Messages (1-on-1):** Connect privately with other activists, project leaders, or researchers to plan local projects.

### **4. Space Media Gallery & Documents**

- **Centralized Library:** Easily access all images, video logs, and project documents shared within that specific SDG Space without digging through past feed posts.

## **How to Participate as a Member**

1. **Browse Spaces:** Navigate to the **Spaces** directory from the main navigation menu at the top of the website. (or just click [here](https://www.sdgconnect.org/community/discover/spaces)!)
2. **Join Your Focus Goals:** Click **Join Space** on any of the 17 SDG Spaces that align with your personal goals or organization’s mission.
3. **Introduce Yourself:** Start by posting an introduction in the Space feed or sending a message in the Space Group Chat.
4. **Collaborate:** Share your local projects, ask for advice on climate initiatives, or vote on community-driven sustainability polls!
